Support in English
Support your child with their reading
At WBJS, our goal is for every child to begin their Secondary Education as competent readers, ready to access a new wide and exciting curriculum. We know for sure that reading is crucial to their future success at Secondary School and beyond. Research from the OECD says that:
“Students who are highly engaged in a wide range of reading activities are more likely than other students to be effective learners and to perform well at school. Research also documents a strong link between reading practices, motivation and proficiency among adults. (OECD 2021)
How you can help:
- Encourage reading for pleasure. Reading itself is vital but enjoying reading is even more important! If you don’t believe us then follow the link to the National Literacy Trust here.
- Visit the library regularly.
- Follow their interests - be it football, ponies, lego or fossils!
- Keep sharing books with your child until at least Year 6.
- Get caught reading – whether it be novels, joke books, newspapers, recipes and more.
- Limit screen time. Watching a screen is easier than reading a book, but don’t give in to pester power. They’ll thank you in the long run.
